On “Kudzu” Brennan Wedl pitches a bruising changeup to the lilting indie rock of previous single “2 Dollar Pistol”. The track name checks the invasive kudzu vine that has reaped havoc on southeastern agriculture through rapid growth that chokes out native plants. Showcasing her ability to explode stories into analogies that blur across multiple facets of life, Wedl’s kudzu grows out of her experiences growing up in a family active in the Minnesota Catholic Church. As a self-described "little helion”, she struggled to find a home in the church. “Kudzu” harnesses her frustration at the holistic malnutrition she experienced trying to subsist on what the church told her would make her feel whole.
It’s not just about religion though, it's an attack on toxic relationships in general. A polemic against those times that people get lost in their personal relationships to the point of becoming someone they’re not. With grinding guitars and pounding drums the claustrophobic sense of struggling for breath is only given respite by Wedl’s assured vocals that offer strength despite the fragile content with
